People attending the National Breast Cancer Research Institute’s annual St Valentine’s Ball this weekend at The Ardilaun have a chance of winning a diamond pendant and matching earrings.

The number of patients availing of breast care services annually at University Hospital Galway has almost doubled in the past four years.

Following on from the hugely successful Pink Afternoon in aid of the National Breast Cancer Research Institute held in Lisloughrey Lodge, Mairead Geehan, events manager at the lodge, is producing a Truffles and Bubbles evening to give additional support to this great charity. This event forms part of a co-ordinated effort by Mairead to raise €10,000 for breast cancer research in the Galway and Mayo region.

Broadcaster and patron of the National Breast Cancer Research Institute Gráinne Seoige is urging people to organise a fundraising event at their home or workplace in aid of the National Breast Cancer Research Institute.

The Cases Wine Christmas Wine Fair will take place on Thursday November 5 at Cases Wine Warehouse on the Tuam Road. More than 120 wines from 20 importers will be available for tasting on the night, with the all proceeds going to the National Breast Cancer Research Institute. There will also be cheeses to sample from Seamus Sheridan and plenty of live music and craic. Last year’s event was a sell-out, raising more than €2,000 for Enable Ireland, and this year Peter Boland of Cases hopes to better that figure. The National Breast Cancer Research Institute will hold a breast cancer information day at the University Hospital Galway’s breast cancer unit from 2pm to 5pm on Sunday.

This week I have a few different items to mention and would like to suggest that it might be a good time to shop around for Christmas wine. There are some really good deals available now and also watch out for some up and coming wine fairs such as Cases Wine Fair on the Tuam Road. It is on today (Thursday) from 6.30pm to 10pm and the €20 ticket will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Research Institute. There will be 120 wines to taste and cheese from Sheridan’s. As wine makes a really acceptable present I suggest you make an early Christmas present list and note anyone who would like a bottle or two or indeed a full case! If you are buying a pretty expensive wine for a wine lover, ask the advice of the wine shop’s most senior person and usually you will be well advised.
